Back when the Indian MotoGP Grand Prix was first announced, skeptics and naysayers wondered if India could handle such a massive motoring spectacle. There were doubts, especially with other new races, like the one in Kazakhstan, hitting the brakes due to postponements. But then, Paolo Ciabatti, the big cheese at the Ducati Lenovo team, stepped onto the scene, saw the potential in the Buddh Circuit, and fired up the engines. And the rest, my friends, became history!
Fast forward to the inaugural IndianOil Grand Prix of India, and holy moly, it set the world on fire! Over 100,000 die-hard speed freaks from every corner of the planet flocked to the event, and it beamed across TVs in a jaw-dropping 195 countries across the world! It wasn’t just a race; it was a global phenomenon, like India threw a wild bash and all motor heads were invited.
The event also featured popular Indian celebrities such as Bollywood actors Ranveer Singh and John Abraham alongside Indian cricketer Yuvraj Singh.
Despite the naysayers in the mainstream media and haters alike, within just two days of the inaugural edition of MotoGP Bharat, the global governing body of motorcycle racing, FIM, announced MotoGP’s return to India in 2024. The Grand Prix of India will be held as the 16th race in its calendar, after the San Marino GP as per the provisional calendar released globally.
