Filmmaker Tyler Perry shared a past experience where he had to face the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), except he revealed to be on the receiving end after an audit revealed the IRS owed him $9 million in return.
At the 2022 Earn Your Leisure Conference, Perry discussed his successful career journey along with some of the challenges and learning experiences he faced along the way.
“Money isn’t something that I had and nobody taught me that taxes had to be paid,” he shared. “I didn’t go to college, but I paid for Harvard many times over in the mistakes that I made.”
Over the course of twenty five years, Tyler Perry went from having only $500 in his pocket, sleeping in his car, to being a billionaire.
Perry eventually moved his TV partnerships from TBS to the Discovery Networks, and finally over to Viacom. With his Viacom deal, Tyler Perry is now producing his TV shows and films under the same umbrella. As a result, Perry saw his net worth balloon into billionaire status. However, all of this means more work, instead of less. The famed filmmaker recently had to fire his accounting team. Perry discovered the IRS owed him $9 million, as the result of an overpayment.
